Oolite is the native limestone bedrock that South Florida is literally built on. The stone is composed of small spherical grains of carbonate (ooids) cemented together by calcium carbonate, giving it a soft warm cream tone with a fine textured face. Oolite blocks have been quarried and used in Miami architecture for over a century: coral rock walls, pier foundations, mansion exteriors, and garden walls. The Epic quarry is the only operation in Florida still pulling and hand-cutting Oolite at production scale.

Oolite is the native limestone of South Florida and is what most locals call coral rock. Geologically it is oolitic limestone, composed of small carbonate spheres rather than fossilized coral, but the appearance and historic use are nearly identical.
